How Can You Get VP in Pokemon Champions?

Pokemon Champions is the latest and greatest way to battle in the Pokemon Universe, and part of competitive battling is training your Pokemon. In Champions, doing so requires you to spend a currency called VP. VP is also used to acquire new Pokemon inside of Pokemon Champions. What is VP, and how do you get it?

What is Pokemon Champions?

Pokemon Champions is a competitive-first Pokemon battle simulator. It focuses purely on the best part of Pokemon - beating your opponents in head to head battle. Teams will be built from your Pokemon in Pokemon Home as well as Pokemon acquired in the game directly.

Thanks to the game being a live-service battler, there will be balanced and streamlined mechanics in these matches, allowing for the competitive experience to evolve over time. This allows for hardcore trainers to further enjoy the art of battling.

Also, Pokemon Champions will receive regular updates, whether that it so add new Pokemon, new battle mechanics, new formats, or even new cosmetics. This is the live-service battler we have all dreamed of, and it is just moments away.

What is VP in Pokemon Champions?

VP stands for "Victory Points", a currency that is used to change stats, abilities, moves, and a whole lot of other things. The currency, according to the Pokemon Champions website, cannot be purchased using real money. You will have to earn it in-game.

How do you earn VP?

VP can be earned by winning in Ranked battles inside of Pokemon Champions. You will earn a different amount depending on if you win or lose, and potentially based on your rank. There are not many details out about how much you will make per match, so keep an eye on OHKO for updates, as we will have all the latest news for Pokemon Champions as soon as it comes out.

An iportant thing to mention is that Pokemon Champion's website specifically calls out that it will not be purchasable with real-life money, so your wallet is safe for now. Your free time? Not so much.

How much VP does everything cost?

Working off of the latest footage we have of Pokemon Champions, here is the cost of everything in the game as shown so far:

How much VP does it cost to change Moves?

Changing moves will cost 100 VP per move. This cost applies every time you change a single move. For example, if you change all four moves at once, it will cost you 400 VP. Let's hope you aren't completely switching your builds often enough for that to stack up.

How much VP does it cost to change Stats?

Pokemon Champions uses a new stat system called "Stat Points" which we will get into in a different article, but just know that each Pokemon can have 66 stat points assigned at a time. Each stat point costs 2 VP to assign, so a full change of your Pokemon's stats will cost 132 VP. It does not cost VP to remove stat points, just to add them.

Note that there are not currently any indications of IVs being changeable, leading us to believe they may be gone for good. IVs were always the most annoying part of breeding a Pokemon, but their removal means that moves like Foul Play may be much more valuable pending a nerf.

How much VP does it cost to change Abilities?

Changing your Pokemon's abilities will cost 400 VP every time you choose to do so. This is the most expensive single thing you can change on your Pokemon that we know about right now, so be prepared to pay up if you need to change to a hidden ability or back again.

How much VP does it cost to change Nature/Stat Alignment?

New to Pokemon Champions is referring to Nature as "STat Alignment", according to the footage shown. Changing your Pokemon's Stat Alignment will cost 200 VP each time. Changing from a defensive nature to an offensive nature will be the second most expensive single thing you change, so think carefully about the builds you go for.

How much VP does it cost to change Items?

As of July 22nd, 2025, we do not know much about how items will work in Pokemon Champions. We do have an indication from the footage shown that items do return, as the boxes show a "Held Items" toggle, but it is unknown if these will be unlocked with VP, carried over from main series games, or acquired in a completely different way. We will make sure you know as soon as we do.

How much VP does it cost to completely redo a Pokemon Team?

If we do the math from the above figures and assume you are changing everything on a 6 Pokemon team, it would cost:

  • 6 Pokemon * 4 moves = 24 moves * 100 VP = 2400 VP
  • 6 Pokemon * 66 stat points = 396 stat points * 2 VP = 792 VP
  • 6 Pokemon * 400 VP per Ability = 2400 VP
  • 6 Pokemon * 200 VP per Stat Alignment = 1200 VP;
  • In total: 6792 VP

Yikes. That is, according to what we've seen, almost enough VP to permanently get 7 new Pokemon from Champions. Now, the situation where you change everything about every Pokemon is not realistic. We know. But it does show how fast these costs can stack up.

Conclusion

Victory Points in Pokemon Champions are a complex currency that we currently don't know everything about. However, what we do know looks like it will reward consistently good players for winning battles. The more games you win, the more VP you will have to try out new compositions of your team or even new team members.

Keep your eyes on OHKO for updates and news regarding Pokemon Champions as it happens. We will be busy building tools and compiling all the information you will need to climb the ladder and reach the top of Pokemon Champions.
