What are Stat Points in Pokemon Champions?
Pokemon Champions is the latest and greatest way to battle in the Pokemon Universe, and part of competitive battling is training your Pokemon. In Champions, stat points are a new system that replaces EVs and IVs. How do these stat points work, and how do they differ from EVs and IVs?
What is Pokemon Champions?
Pokemon Champions is a competitive-first Pokemon battle simulator. It focuses purely on the best part of Pokemon - beating your opponents in head to head battle. Teams will be built from your Pokemon in Pokemon Home as well as Pokemon bought in the game directly.
Thanks to the game being a live-service game, there will be balanced and streamlined mechanics in these matches, allowing for the competitive experience to evolve over time. This allows for dedicated trainers to further enjoy the art of battling.
Also, Pokemon Champions will receive regular updates, whether that it so add new Pokemon, new battle mechanics, new formats, or even new cosmetics. This is the live-service battler we have all hoped for is coming soon.
What are Stat Points in Pokemon Champions?
Stat Points are the new way of changing your Pokemon's stats. Easy enough, right? Each stat - HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed can have up to 32 stat points assigned to it. The more stat points you have assigned, the more of that stat you have. The catch? You can only assign up to 66 stat points assigned to a single Pokemon.
How do you buy Stat Points?
Stat points can be adjusted on your Pokemon in exchange for VP, the primary currency of Pokemon Champions. Adding a stat point to a stat costs 2 VP, while removing stat points doesn't cost a thing. Adding a full load of stat points to a Pokemon will cost you 132 VP.
How do I get more VP?
The only shown way to get VP in Pokemon Champions is by winning ranked matches. It is not yet know how much VP you will get from winning a match, but it is likely to vary. It is also likely that there will be 'quests' to complete for more VP. Either way, you will be battling hard to grind up the VP you need to do anything in Pokemon Champions.
How do Stat Points differ from EVs and IVs?
Stat Points are very similar to EVs. In fact, a full load of Stat Points in a stat is the equivalent of a full load of 252 EVs. That much is the same. The big difference comes in when you look at the max stats achievable with STat Points: You get 1 extra point in a stat with 66 total Stat Points when compared to 510 EVs. This could be the difference maker in some cases, but the meta is yet to form for Champions. We will have to see.
Are there IVs in Pokemon Champions?
It has not been shown whether we will have IVs to change in Pokemon Champions, and given the show only Stat Points as the option to change on your Pokemon, there is a good chance that IVs and IV breeding are gone. While this could be untrue and they could've just conveniently shown a full 31 IV Gardevoir in the dmeo, we are not optimistic for the odds ov IVs returning. We will update you once we hear more.
Conclusion
Stat Points are a welcome shakeup to the stat systems in competitive battling. They are relatively cheap in VP to change, but offer a different sort of team building when compared to IVs and EVs. We will have to see how the two systems compare upon the release of Pokemon Champions next year in 2026, but for now, we are excited to see what it holds.
Keep your eyes on OHKO for updates and news regarding Pokemon Champions as we learn more. We will be busy building tools (including a Stat Points calculator and team builder!) and compiling all the information you will need to crush your foes when the game drops.
